VOCABULARY #9

Last vocabulary list of the semester yayyyyy

(I actually already looked up all these words using Random Absence Mentoring's vocab page awhile ago, so I'm not going to do my usual guessing thing this week. Anyway, all definitions are either copied or paraphrased from Dictionary.com, except for "matrix" and "vicissitude" which are from Wordnik.)

01) aficionado an ardent devotee, fan, or enthusiast
02) browbeat to intimidate by domineering or overbearing looks or words; bully
03) commensurate proportionate; corresponding in amount, magnitude, or degree; adequate; of equal extent or duration
04) diaphanous sheer and light; almost completely transparent or translucent; delicately hazy
05) emolument salary, fees, or profit from employment; compensation for employment
06) foray a quick or sudden raid or attack; an initial venture
07) genre a class, category, or style of artistic endeavor
08) homily a Biblical sermon; admonitory or moralizing discourse; inspirational saying or cliché
09) immure to enclose within walls; seclude or confine; imprison
10) insouciant free from concern, worry, or anxiety; carefree; nonchalant
11) matrix a situation or surrounding substance within which something else originates, develops, or is contained
12) obsequies funeral rites or ceremonies
13) panache verve, style, flair, pizaazz
14) persona a narrator or character in a literary work identified with the author; in Jung's psychology, a mask or façade that does not represent the true inner personality; a person's evident personality, as of a well-known offical, actor, celebrity, etc.
15) philippic a speech or discourse of bitter denunciation
16) prurient prone to lascivious thoughts, desires, etc.; having a restless desire or longing
17) sacrosanct extremely sacred; not to be entered or trespassed upon
18) systemic of or pertaining to a system
19) tendentious having/showing a tendency, bias, or purpose
20) vicissitude a change or variation; the quality of being changable; regular change or alternation from one thing to another
