VOCABULARY #8

Yes indeed, this is the semester's penultimate vocab list!

(I actually already looked up all these words using Random Absence Mentoring's vocab page awhile ago, so I'm not going to do my usual guessing thing this week. Anyway, all definitions are either copied or paraphrased from Dictionary.com.)

01) abase to reduce or lower, as in rank or reputation; to humble or degrade
02) abdicate to give up or renounce a right, responsibility, power, throne, etc., especially formally/publicly
03) abomination something hated; intense aversion or loathing; a vile or shameful action
04) brusque abrupt or blunt
05) saboteur someone who commits/practices sabotage
06) debauchery excessive indulgence in sensual pleasures
07) proliferate to grow, produce, increase in number, or spread rapidly
08) anachronism something not in its correct historical/chronological time; an error in chronology
09) nomenclature a set or system of names or terms, used in a particular discipline or community
10) expurgate to purge of offensive content; to censor
11) bellicose eager to fight; pugnacious
12) gauche lacking social grace; awkward, crude, or tactless
13) rapacious greedy; prone to seizing for plunder or greed
14) paradox a statement that seems self-contradictory but expresses a possible truth; anything self-contradictory
15) conundrum a paradoxical, insoluble, or difficult problem; a dilemma; a riddle
16) anomaly an exception, abnormality, incongruity, or inconsistency
17) ephemeral only lasting a short time; transitory
18) rancorous bitter, resentful, or malicious
19) churlish rude, peasantlike, or insubordinate
20) precipitous steep, as of a cliff/precipice; hasty; sudden and careless
